Angling 4 Oceans
Highslide JS Angling 4 Oceans, a campaign of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, is working to motivate and activate recreational saltwater anglers to improve marine conservation so that America's more than 9 million recreational anglers can continue to enjoy saltwater fishing. Angling 4 Oceans is a partnership of recreational fishing organizations, the fishing industry and state agencies. With your help, we're navigating a future for saltwater fishing.

Tackling Magnuson

Signed into law in 2007, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act provided positive changes for recreational saltwater anglers and included all of the SALT Principles recommended by the Angling 4 Oceans coalition. The coalition has been closely following the rulemaking surrounding the law’s passage, especially as it relates to the National Saltwater Fishing Registry. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) put out a rule, required by the Magnuson-Stevens Act to establish the National Saltwater Angler Registry. The purpose of the registry is to provide NOAA with catch data from saltwater anglers who fish in federal waters so that marine fish stocks can be managed more efficiently. The registry will enable the federal government to identify more accurately who is fishing and what is being caught. The data generated by the registry will ultimately provide NOAA with the crucial evidence it needs to better allocate marine fisheries resources to recreational saltwater anglers.

Healthy Oceans

The Angling 4 Oceans coalition focuses attention on creating healthy oceans and coastal fish habitat to improve and sustain our recreational saltwater fishing opportunities. The U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the Pew Oceans Commission (now working together as the Joint Ocean Commission) have put forth comprehensive sets of policy recommendations designed to restore the ecological health of the oceans. By implementing the policy recommendations of the Joint Ocean Commission and coordinating partnerships through the National Fish Habitat Initiative, recreational anglers will benefit from healthy coastal ecosystems. Currently, there is increased pressure to find more close-to-home energy sources, including oil and gas, as well as renewable supplies of wind and wave energy from our nation’s coastal waterways. The Angling 4 Oceans coalition has developed the CAST Principles to help federal decision makers develop energy development while protecting fish and wildlife resources.

Report: Are You a Saltwater Angler?

The Angling 4 Oceans coalition has produced a guide for recreational anglers to get more involved in the rule-making procedures under the Magnuson-Stevens Act, as well as to get saltwater sportsmen engaged in the eight fisheries councils across the country. We encourage anglers to take part in our campaign by joining a national, state, or local fishing organization, write or call key decision makers in the administration, and utilize the media in educating the public on marine fisheries issues. Report: Navigating a Future for Saltwater Fishing

Research commissioned by the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership's (TRCP) Angling 4 Oceans campaign, shows that the economic impact of recreational saltwater fishing is 71 percent greater than the commercial finfish industry. In addition, a survey of state marine fisheries departments and sportfishing organizations shows that every responding state and 81 percent of the responding sportfishing groups agreed that saltwater fishing licenses, and the revenues generated from the license, have benefited fish conservation. The research supports the Angling 4 Oceans campaign's SALT principles to improve marine fisheries management and recreational saltwater fishing in the reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
